Measure the garment, not yourself

Take a kurta you already wear and like. Lay it flat, button it, and measure straight across the chest from one underarm seam to the other. Double that number — that is the garment chest to compare with a size list.

Three numbers

• Chest — the number above, doubled.
• Waist — measured flat at the narrowest point of the garment, doubled.
• Length — from the shoulder seam at the neck down to the hem.

Ease

A straight kurta needs about 5 cm more than your body chest to hang properly; an Anarkali needs less at the chest because the flare does the work lower down.

Pant length

Kurta sets often come with a standard pant length. If you are under about 5 ft 2 in, expect to hem the pant — that is normal and not a fault.
